real american

Growing up on the East Side of New York City during the 60's and 70's we experienced a wonderful evolution in neighborhood hospitality and restaurants. We were born into a world of local saloons and nightclubs.

Michael "Billy" Condon, Toots Shor and Jack Dempsey were all great New York restaurateurs who were invariably gracious, and at whose restaurants my brother and I were taught good manners, good behavior and good food.

From these neighborhood roots in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and other great cities, the 'soul' of the great American restaurant experience was born, exploding across our nation in the past thirty years to become America's largest industry. It is rooted in the urban traditions of community, hospitality and large portions of good food, prepared daily from quality ingredients and served to all at a fair price. This is what we call 'real american' cuisine.

Our "Nan", our father's mother, believed in hot lunches and substantial dinners: steaks, chops, chicken and seafood combined with burgers, salads, 'samiches', fresh vegetables and, of course, the omnipresent potato.

In keeping with the times we've added wraps, pastas, soups, chili and for the 17 years we've been here in Derwood, we've been praised for our world famous wings. Buffalo, Teri, Swirls, Naked, Bay, Wasabi, Naked or Swing, the Outta the Way has the "Best Wings in the World", according to all who take the time to drop by and try.

It is in keeping with this spirit of hospitality: good food, a pleasant smile and a funky spirit, that we welcome all of you who find your way to the outta the way cafe.

Peace and Love
