Is the Outta The Way Cafe Montgomery County's first "GREEN" restaurant? It just might be! We founded the Outta The Way Cafe in 1989. The following year Chip served on a poly-styrene task force in Prince George's County. By 1991 the Outta the Way Cafe had begun a recycling program that was used by Montgomery County as a model for other restaurants. Approximately 65% of our solid waste was being recycled annually when the Outta The Way Cafe was recognized by County Executive Neal Potter as the first restaurant in Montgomery County to initiate a recycling program .
In 2005 we were again honored by the Montgomery County SORRT program for recycling over 67% of our solid waste and 100% of our cooking oil. BTW...we've also been cooking in non-trans fat oils (canola and soy) for 19 years (the week after we bought the place from Mr. Barton). How cool is that? I wonder if that would officially makes us Montgomery County's first GREEN restaurant?
In any event, we've been "GREEN" for a very long time, and we all think it's a very good "thing". I know that 2008 was the year that suddenly everyone was about being "GREEN", so I wanted all of our REGULARS to know that you've all been "GREEN" the the Cafe for 20 years. Every beer you've drunk has reduced the earth's carbon footprint (when compared to drinking elsewhere) so pat yourselves on the back for doing something that large corporations have been looking at for two decades, but about which have only recently developed any "vision". Don'tcha love it!
